We can feel overwhelmed by all the parenting responsibilities we have. Being a parent is an ongoing lesson. It's only when your child gets stung by an insect or has to be shaved the knee that you may realize how much we don't know. It's inevitable that accidents will happen. However, it is important to be able to recognize the real issues and how to deal with them.
Cleaning Minor Cuts
Your child will likely scrape or cut their knees on some sort of object at one point. It is important to be familiar with wound care. It is easy to clean minor cuts. First, stop bleeding using a blind pressure. Next, use a clean cloth to cover the area for about 1 to 2 minutes. Apply antibiotic cream to the area and wrap it in a bandage. You will need emergency treatment for larger or more severe cuts.
CPR
This is something that everyone should be able to do. This is especially important in today's climate. First, ensure they are available and then shout for help. Call 999 immediately. Keep your face clear of theirs to avoid infection. Although chest compressions are important, rescue breaths are not recommended right now, due to the coronavirus. Always follow the ABC of CPR. The acronyms stand for Airways, Breathing and Circulation.
Choking Relief
Children should not cough if they have food stuck to their mouths. They may be choking if they make no noise. If you're trying to help a baby who is choking, you should give five blows to the back using your heel. The Heimlich Manoeuvre may be required for older children. You may have to stand behind your child when performing this maneuver on them. You will wrap your arms around your child's navel and make a fist with one hand. Next, press hard into their abdomen using fast upward thrusts.
Treating Poisoning
You should first call 999 if you suspect your child is poisoned. Then, take the child outside to fresh air. CPR should be started if your child stops breathing. You must continue until your child can breathe by themselves.
Calming A Fever
Normal body temperatures are different for everyone. However, if a child's temperature exceeds 38C, it is considered a fever. You may notice that they feel warmer when you touch their chest and back. However, it is important to use a digital thermometer. It is important to check for signs of dehydration. However, if the patient appears distressed or unwell, you should seek medical attention immediately. Calpol and Nurofen are good options to bring your temperature down. Remember to not panic. It is important to ensure that your pets are kept as cool as possible. This could include giving them a cooling bath or more fluids.
Since every baby grows at his/her own pace, measure the baby's height for the best fit. It is much more accurate than going off of the baby's age. Call us with any questions and we will be happy to help you determine the best fit for your baby.
