Congratulations on becoming a father! You may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of your baby, or you might just have found out that you are going to be a father. If you're like many dads-to be, you might feel overwhelmed. What happens if you make a huge mistake? What happens if you aren't a good father to your children? How can you manage sleep deprivation?
Fatherhood is not easy. Don't worry, you'll still learn a lot in the first few months with your baby. Although fatherhood doesn't come with a guide (wouldn’t that be great?), it does include helpful advice. It does include helpful advice from parents who have been there. We offer some support guidance to help dads transition into their new role.
Get Diaper Duty Under Control Early.
You may be asking yourself, "How can dads help with their baby?" You can take over diaper changing. In the first few weeks of your baby's life, you should change all of their diapers. This will make your partner feel great and give you the chance to bond with your baby. Consider cloth diapers. They are better for the environment and can also save you thousands of bucks!
You should be ready for changes
It can be very intense to have a newborn for the first few months. You and your partner will be sleeping less, but you'll also have to figure out a new routine. You should accept that things may change for a while. For the first few weeks, you may not be able to socialize and have little time for other things. Your relationship may take a backseat during this time. Be sure to show your love in the way that your partner prefers. This could be as simple as a hug, words of encouragement, or acts of service.
Make sure your kitchen is clean and well-stocked.
Your house will be messy during the newborn phase. When you are able to, clean up your house a bit. Keep your kitchen clean and organized. Make sure you have plenty of healthy snacks and beverages ready for baby before he arrives. Bring snacks and drinks for your partner if they are too busy with the baby.
Do not panic if you don't feel connected to your baby right away.
Parents are often pressured to immediately feel a deep love for their baby. Don't be alarmed if you don't feel the love immediately. This is perfectly normal. This does not mean that you aren’t infatuated or unloving of the baby in front you. It takes some dads longer to bond with their child than others. Be involved in your baby's day to speed up the bonding process. Spend some time with your baby. You'll soon be amazed at how much you love your baby.
Take the Picture.
It is a fast stage in your newborn's life, so take plenty of photos and videos. Be sure to not leave the camera in your partner's hands. Take a few photos of the baby and get behind the camera every now and again. You should try to capture your partner enjoying the moment. You'll both treasure those photos for a lifetime!
Spend some time alone with your baby.
As we've already said, diaper changing is a great way for you to bond with your baby. The bonding doesn’t have to end with diaper change. You can build a deeper connection with your baby by making sure you have some time alone each day. You can read to your baby, take them on walks around the neighborhood, or snuggle them while you shower. Your partner will also reap the benefits.
Remember that mistakes are okay. As a parent, there are likely to be many mistakes. Self-compassion is a virtue!
Since every baby grows at his/her own pace, measure the baby's height for the best fit. It is much more accurate than going off of the baby's age. Call us with any questions and we will be happy to help you determine the best fit for your baby.
